Incredible Growth – The Dansko Footwear Story
Everybody loves a love story, and Dansko shoes were born out of just such romance. When Peter Kjellerup, a guest riding instructor from Denmark turned up at the pony farm belonging to Mandy Cabot’s mother, it didn’t take long for these two to start seeing a future together. Once married and settled on their own Pennsylvania riding establishment, it was a horse- purchasing trip back to Denmark that caused what would become a wholly different career for this couple. Finding cosy, closed-back clogs that’d be perfect for barn work back home looked like nothing less than a great find at the time. Little do they know what fantastic opportunity lay ahead.
It didn’t take long before buddies and relatives were also placing orders for this great footwear. They shortly found themselves selling Dansko shoes on sale out of the back of the vehicle at pony shows, and still they couldn’t stay abreast of the demand. In 1990, Peter and Mandy decided to incorporate their fledgling business as Dansko Shoes, the translation for “Danish shoes.” From those early years, it has been a fast rise to the top. By 2002, the company had experienced an amazing 46% rate of growth and sold a million shoes.
